Providing a very high-end service in luxury hotels, such as those offered by the Oetker Collection Group, takes an expertise that also depends on the seamless operation of IT. To ensure centralized protection of the IT infrastructure of its nine hotels around the world, Oetker Collection opted for G DATA security solutions.
Oetker Collection is the luxury hotel business line of the German Oetker Group, a family business also active in shipping and agri-food. Oetker Collection, whose first steps in the hotel business date back to 1941, has undertaken an international expansion in recent years. Today, the Oetker Collection portfolio consists of nine prestigious hotels. Collectively referred to as ‘masterpiece hotels,’ they are distinguished by their extremely high quality of service. Each property is one-of-a-kind, reflecting a fascinating European heritage and sharing a passion for hospitality, historical architecture, and exceptional interior design, all while paying close attention to detail.
To support the growth of the company, the issue of replacing its IT infrastructure protection arose. The solution the Group was looking for had to respond to new threats and be integrated into the future project of centralizing its IT resources. The Parisian hotel Le Bristol Paris had taken the lead in this project. Florian Rousselle, Global Operations IT Manager for Oetker Collection, explains: “The antivirus software previously installed was not configurable and we felt we didn’t really have a full grasp of the network status. We also wanted to be better protected against ransomware, which had begun to make its appearance at the time.” G DATA solutions were able to address these issues during the selection tests. The combination of the two analysis engines operating in parallel ensures optimal detection of threats. The behavior analysis module makes it possible to block new or unknown dangers, such as ransomware. Finally, the administration console provides a detailed view of the security status of the workstations.
The first deployment of the solution was implemented at the Le Bristol Paris hotel. Its computer network consists of 200 clients, 30 servers, and ten point-of-sale stations. G DATA Endpoint Protection was the solution chosen. In addition to anti-malware protection, it makes it possible to implement advanced security policies. “The web filtering and peripheral control, with the possibility for the user to request an exception, have given us a certain peace of mind and a better control of Internet usage in the company,” says Rousselle.
The first year of operation that followed confirmed the solution’s excellent early performance. Specifically, it was able to contain the many successive waves of ransomware attacks that occurred in 2014.
In response to these good results, and after additional safety audits, the effectiveness of the web filtering and detection tests convinced Oetker Collection of the strength of the G DATA solution. It was consequently approved in 2015 as the standard antivirus solution for all of the Group’s hotels.
Since then, a migration plan has been introduced to unify the protection at the various sites. Several sites have already been equipped with G DATA: Le Bristol Paris, Eden Rock - St Barths, Fregate Island Private in the Seychelles, and the Parisian properties of Oetker Collection. By 2018, the Collection’s hotels around the world will be linked to a centralized infrastructure and protected by G DATA solutions – an infrastructure consisting of over 700 clients and servers.
