G DATA discovers new ransomware Manamecrypt

File-encrypting Trojan uses unconventional infection vector.

G DATA SecurityLabs have detected a new ransomware called Manamecrypt, also referred to as CryptoHost. This new malware does not only encrypt files but also blocks certain programs from running. It also uses a way of spreading which used to be atypical for this type of malware: it comes bundled with otherwise “clean” software. Manamecrypt is installed alongside the manipulated program. G DATA solutions detect and remove this malware.

How to stay safe from ransomware

  • Install a comprehensive security solution which includes a malware scanner as well as proactive technologies which address unknown threats
  • Software should only be downloaded directly from a vendor’s website
  • Backups of important documents and data must created on a regular basis
  • Any installed programs should always be kept up to date and updates installed as soon as they become available
  • Emails from unknown senders should always be examined carefully.
